I do not love the bright sword for its sharpness, nor the arrow for its swiftness, nor the warrior for his glory. I love only that which they defend. (J.R.R.Tolkien, The Two Towers)

When I carry a gun, I don't do so because I am looking for a fight, but because I'm looking to be left alone. The gun at my side means that I cannot be forced, only persuaded. I don't carry it because I'm afraid, but because it enables me to be unafraid. It doesn't limit the actions of those who would interact with me through reason, only the actions of those who would do so by force.

On being retired

I came to a fork in the road and took the one on the right. It led to a place that I'm only just beginning to explore. There is no feeling of having to be there on time any more, no pressure to get it done, no performing for others. Just the knowledge that I should have come here much sooner. I feel much like Red in Shawshank Redemption on the bus during his run to the border..."I'm so excited that I can hardly hold a thought in my head...the excitement that only a free man can feel on the start of a long journey."

I served my 36 years but it was by my own choice. I realize that now. But that's past and done. Now I have other choices to make and other consequences to live with.
