I do not love the bright sword for its sharpness, nor the arrow for its swiftness, nor the warrior for his glory. I love only that which they defend. (J.R.R.Tolkien, The Two Towers)

When I carry a gun, I don't do so because I am looking for a fight, but because I'm looking to be left alone. The gun at my side means that I cannot be forced, only persuaded. I don't carry it because I'm afraid, but because it enables me to be unafraid. It doesn't limit the actions of those who would interact with me through reason, only the actions of those who would do so by force.

A Week on the Beach

Katherine, my son Brandon, and his wife Misty on Topsail Island Beach in North Carolina.

We just returned from a week on the beach in North Carolina. Lots of sun and sand. I did some metal detecting and found a few things although it's not a really good beach to detect on (not enough people to loose things).

The piece of driftwood has what appears to be a .22 caliber slug embedded in it. The $10 bill was stuffed inside an empty cigarette pack and the man's ring was beside the cigarette pack.

Kathy specialized in looking for sea glass .

I brought home about 2 gallons of assorted sea shells to make displays and wind chimes with.
