I do not love the bright sword for its sharpness, nor the arrow for its swiftness, nor the warrior for his glory. I love only that which they defend. (J.R.R.Tolkien, The Two Towers)

When I carry a gun, I don't do so because I am looking for a fight, but because I'm looking to be left alone. The gun at my side means that I cannot be forced, only persuaded. I don't carry it because I'm afraid, but because it enables me to be unafraid. It doesn't limit the actions of those who would interact with me through reason, only the actions of those who would do so by force.

Responsibility

In the past few weeks, I've made several trips to Wise with subjects charged with just about everything from domestic violence, to drunk in public, to driving under the influence of alcohol/drugs, to felony inditements for selling drugs and in every single instance they all insisted that they were innocent. The wife that left extensive bruises and scratches on her husband didn't touch him. The intoxicated driver that couldn't stand up hadn't had anything to drink. The drug dealer didn't sell drugs to the undercover officer. The female charged with driving under the influence of drugs swore she hadn't taken anything but still died of an overdose while she was on the way to jail.

And then when the magistrate prints off the commitment papers for the regional jail they all blame us for causing them to lose their job, causing their wife/husband to divorce them, causing them to lose their drivers license etc ad nauseam.

Just once I would like to see someone take responsibility for what they have done and admit that they were wrong. Just once say yes, I did it. Just once not blame everyone and everything for the mess they have made of their lives. However, I'm not going to be holding my breath.
