I do not love the bright sword for its sharpness, nor the arrow for its swiftness, nor the warrior for his glory. I love only that which they defend. (J.R.R.Tolkien, The Two Towers)

When I carry a gun, I don't do so because I am looking for a fight, but because I'm looking to be left alone. The gun at my side means that I cannot be forced, only persuaded. I don't carry it because I'm afraid, but because it enables me to be unafraid. It doesn't limit the actions of those who would interact with me through reason, only the actions of those who would do so by force.

Is That Dog Wearing a Dress?

Yes, that's a bulldog in a dress. But what's really odd is that he (the man not the dog) is preaching. I've been listening for the last 20 minutes and he's not made a single point that I can follow. Now the real question I have is..."Was the dog already asleep when the show started or did his preaching put it to sleep?" Ah, now it makes sense...he just came to the end of the program and the last 3 minutes his point was crystal clear...we should be ashamed of our self and the country will go to the dogs(thus the sleeping dog prop) if we don't send him a tax deductible love offering or buy his videos.

DANG IT MAN...THAT HURTS !!!

I had started down the ridge to my hunting stand just at daylight this morning when I felt an intense burning sensation on my stomach. At the same time, I felt 4 or 5 impacts on my face mask. I realized that I had stepped on or very near a hornet's nest. Abandoning any attempts to continue to slip to my stand, I took off like the deer I had seen crossing the road this morning. At least one persistent defender followed me the whole 20 yards to my stand so I had to go on past to lose it. I must be getting wimpy because 8 hours later it's still swollen and still hurts in spite of several applications of Benadryl Cream.

Third Time Again

Once again for the third year in a row I ran into lost hound dogs while hunting. The first was back in November of 2005 when I ran into this handsome fellow.

For that story go to Little Dog Lost.

The second was again in November of 2006 when I helped a deputy catch these two wayward hounds.

For that story go to I Thought I Just Took Care of This.

And Now the Rest of the Story...

Yesterday I didn't get into the woods until around noon. On my way in I saw two hounds with collars and radio transmitters who were obviously lost. (Sorry no pictures this time) I didn't stop but decided that if they were still there on my way back out I would. Well they were and I did. I didn't have any cell service so I copied the number on their tags and called when I got home. I got an answering machine so I left a message as to where I had seen the lost dogs. To date, I still haven't gotten anyone to answer so I don't know the fate of the lost doggies.

THREE STRIKES AND YOU'RE DEAD

Bow season for deer is open now. I had court this morning so I didn't get into the woods until around 1 PM. I literally ran into this Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnake just before I got to my stand. I always kill a venomous snake around a house or populated area but one that is out in the wild is usually another matter. I tried 3 times to go around this one in the path and all 3 times it struck at me so using my back-up .38, I dispatched him/her/whatever it was. It had 9 buttons on the rattle. You can just make them out in the second picture. The arrow is 31 inches long so the snake probably will go 37-40 inches and weighed around 4-5 pounds. I've seen around 12-15 deer so far but not had a good shot at any yet. Almost all of the deer I've seen this year have been smaller than normal. I don't know if I'm seeing yearlings (last years fawn) or if the deer really are smaller this year.
